Sunburn - Part 1
Part 1 - Part 2

Sunburn is uncomfortable and can be a horrible experience. You really need to be careful that you do not burn your skin while outside. Your skin will be sore, red, itchy, and you can have blisters. This can last for days depending on how bad it burns. It looks horrible on top of everything. I hate getting sunburn. It hurts and then you have everyone saying, “Oh, you got burned so badly”; yeah like you weren’t aware. Then, as it heals your skin will literally fall off. You can moisturize all you want, but you have to shed that skin. Peeling skin is disgusting, and if it is on your face, there is no hiding that.

You can get sunburned from being outside and from tanning beds. Tanning beds are a BIG no no! They are so unhealthy and bad for your skin. There is so much skin damage that happens when you use tanning beds, and it happens fast. Remember that you can get burned outside in almost any kind of weather. If it is sunny out, obviously there is a risk. The worst time is the middle of the day usually, that is when the sun is out in its peak. You can also get burned badly if you are swimming and you do not think you need sunscreen because you are in the water. It is almost worse because you get the reflection from the sun glaring off the water. You can get burned in the winter, here again the sun will reflect off of the bright snow. Another factor is wind burn; if you are skiing or snowboarding you are going down the hills fast and creating wind. If it is windy out, or even if it isn’t you still have the reflection off the bright white snow. Even cloudy days when you think that the sun is hidden, you are still getting exposure. I can not tell you how many times I have heard people say they got burned on a cloudy day. Always have sunscreen on if you are outside for longer than 15 minutes. You can burn in that short amount of time, keep that in mind. Remember the thing people forget the most: Reapply!!!! If you are outside, you should reapply at least once if not two or three more times. It depends on how long you are out. Read the back of the sunscreen bottle too, it will tell you the best way to use the product. When my husband goes golfing I tell him to reapply and he forgets. So, I try to tell him at lunch time, when they are out of the sun, they are taking a break, reapply. Do not forget this very important rule.

There are UV rays that will burn your skin. You have the UVA and UVB rays. The UVB are more harmful and they are the burning rays. These are especially damaging and harmful and contribute to skin cancer. Both UVB and UVA will cause wrinkles, age your skin, and burn you. People with light skin or fair skin with light hair are at a greater risk. That does not mean that if your skin is naturally darker you are safe. You should still use sunscreen. There have been studies that show African Americans have more cases of cancer because the lack of sunscreen. Everyone needs sunscreen no matter the color of you skin or hair. Some are more at risk though.
